inspired by tuesdays.

I've decided to add another regular blog post, in addition to things i LOVE wednesdays. I will now be posting an image every Tuesday and discussing my inspiration for the image. I get asked all the time where I get my inspiration for my images. This is a very hard question to answer as it is incredibly random and can come from anywhere: other photographer's work, movies, music, life, dreams, books, etc. So this is my way of answering the question by sharing an image and its inspiration once a week.

Like I said before I keep an inspiration journal where I clip out images, etc. into all the time as well as writing down or sketching ideas. This has been the most efficient way to not forget ideas and to never be lacking inspiration. In fact I think I'm overloaded with inspiration which surprisingly overwhelms me and makes not pick up the camera because I can't choose where to start.

I think the key to finding inspiration is to just keep looking at other art all the time. I subscribe to something like 50 blogs and look at hundreds of images everyday (online, in magazines, and in books). Maybe this is overload but I just love looking at what others are doing and using that to figure out what kind of work I want to do.

Enough typing. Time for pictures.

Here's my image for week one of inspired by tuesdays (though this image is more along the lines of an emulation):
The Nightmare.

... and the inspiration for the image is Henry Fuseli's "The Nightmare"This is my all-time favorite painting. Yes, all-time (at this moment that is). I saw it for the first time in my art history class only a year ago and was so captivated by the image. It really hit me on a very personal note. I don't really care to elaborate on that but needless to say it is an image that has stayed with me in a very personal way. I have been wanting to emulate it ever since I saw it and finally got around to it last night.

...And just for fun a second image that I shot last night:

Detained.

This was inspired by a dream that I had. I have pretty intense and WEIRD dreams. For instance, about a month ago I had a dream that I was part of a crime fighting super hero team and instead of a flying or using a batmobile we traveled via sewer luge. That's right, we basically had a giant tunnel waterslide underground as our transportation. Awesome, I know. I have NO IDEA where that came from.

Your photos seem to be inspired a decent amount by other people's photography on flickr as well, or maybe it's a coincidence. It seems like it's worthy of noting in your descriptions.

Great images either way!

If my images are inspired by other artists I try to always note that in my descriptions, though they are usually inspired by the work of famous photographers (Crewdson, Sherman- crime scenes, Leibovitz- fairytales, etc.). I always like to give credit where credit is due. It's bound to happen that you'll have similar ideas as other but I hope mine are unique enough to stand apart.

I like this, reminds me of a scary movie... only you don't look scared.

As far as being inspired, I'm sure a lot of those photographers Caroline may be talking about were inspired by some famous artist as well. There's nothing new under the sun, it's all in how you do it.

No offense was meant by any means. It just seems like the images pop up soon after others who have done similar things. And those people are artists in their own right too, even if they aren't famous yet.

Regardless, I really do enjoy your photographs! And it is true, nothing is original these days.

Oh, I didn't take offense to it at all. I understand that especially ever since the whole thing with rosie hardy that everyone wants to ensure that proper credit is given. I know I've seen people almost do an exact copy of some of my images with absolutely no credit, when I've known they've seen mine. Honestly just a mention that they were inspired by me would have made it totally fine, which is why I make sure to do it in return cause I definitely know how that feels.

I'm not really sure which images you mean because none of my work from the past year at least has been largely inspired by flickr artists. That's not to say that I haven't felt inspired by trends on the site and that I haven't been inspired by soo many images on there, I just haven't created images yet that were in the same vain because of it. I do intend to give full credit when I do though.

And yes of course they are artists in their own right. Heck, I'm one of them so I know they deserve every bit of respect as the famous ones as well. I was just pointing out that famous works is where I draw my inspiration from for the most part. Well that and America's Next Top Model of course =).
