Application Anxiety.

14 days and counting till the application for grad school is due and I have nowhere near 15 images for the portfolio. Ugh.

On top of that I can't decide a theme. I started working on the balloon series but the images just aren't turning out how I envisioned. You can see the images so far and read about the idea here. With time running out I am doubtful that this series will come together. I would like to keep going with it but perhaps after the application is turned in and I have a bit more time to do it right.

I have pretty much jumped ship, at least for now, on that idea and started a series based on fairy tales, big shocker there I know. Your portfolio should showcase your thoughts, interests and style as an artist and shed some light on possible future work right? And since one of my ideas for a grad school series revolves around fairy tales, in a different way but yes I know.. again, I think it may be a good idea to have the work I apply with deal with this theme.

One thing I will say is I am not sure how "fine art" the work is. I mean it is conceptual but it seems that everything I do is still considered more on the commercial side. This is not a good thing since grad schools are very focused on fine art work.

Here's the first three images I have done for this series (click on the images for a description of the series). What do you guys think? Too commercial? Not good enough to get me accepted??

Goldilocks' Stalker

Snow White's Foreshadowing

Dorothy's Looming Shadow

Hi, (I know you from CSUS)

I like your work. I think the bottom third would be the most powerful to me. The shadow that merge with your legs is quite distracting, lighten it up maybe? Anyway, I notice that the way you stand is very typical, unless that's what you want (but it quite boring if you make more of those). The apple shadow is too small, too far away. The bear shadow is too equal to you. What I mean is, maybe you lack the feeling like the tornatoes one has. They're good lightning and all, but what kind of feeling do you want to show? Maybe you need some connection. What about the bear? What if you have the bear shadow bigger, taller, closer to above your head .. make it feel overwhelming or something. I don't really know the idea about your "metaphor" behind these so forgive me if it's not helpful. Anyway, I think you need more of a "linking" between the subj and the shadow to show off better your idea or emotion. It's kinda commercially, but there's a fine line between commercial and fine art... with more emotion will that help? I think you should keep going with this idea if you are clear what this idea is all about. I'd like to see more, and I also very fond of the balloon series.
